The character were interesting and the focus on the main characters as well as the side characters was handle well. One of indridason's finest novels - a sheer pleasure. Especially the modern culture and state of schemeespel, I don't know if it's just a per I've known about Nordic Noir as a TV thing for some time but I just hadn't read any books in the genre for some reason.

I had also spent a few winters in Reykjavik, going to school, and was very familiar with the scene. The scene in the restaurant Naust, where Spassky and company have dinner, feels very true.

But it also has a note from my father, the last he wrote to me. Young Inspector Erlendur 3 books. Knap uitgewerkte personages, meer dan je dat in een thriller gewoon bent. Marion is now a young man, but we learn about his childhood too. While this book is set in the same world as the Inspector Erlendur series, this first book in the series does not involve Erlendur and he only makes a small cameo at the very end.

It harks to the subject matter and a sentence in the book.

Took me more than half a year, but I managed to read this pages crime novel in its German translation! This is so much more than just a game of chess. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. A great read and further proof that the Icelanders have been good story tellers for over a thousand years. A teenager is killed in a movie theater just after the "match" starts.

The murder mystery wasn't exactly gripping for me personally, though I very much appreciated how the whole process felt naturally slow and credible rather than investigators getting everything right from the get-go. Hmm maybe I should have given it 5 stars, I just don't trust my German enough to assure that it's such a pleasurable read for a native speaker. That's a lot of time, but that's mostly because one's not always in the mood to endure a German language schemersspel. As always with Indridason the pace is slow-going, the atmosphere full of an intangible sadness and the style is without schemmerspel but somehow it gets to you and you end up feeling for characters not so genial to start with. They stayed in one of the larger double rooms the whole weekend; barely seen and no one bothered them. The crime part is far, far below the authors' standard.

Would recommend and would reread in the future.
